Genetics is key to the improvement of welfare in broiler chickens at both juvenile and adult (breeder) stages but progress is hampered currently by the seemingly conflicting demands of welfare, commercial production, food security and calls for increasing intensification to curb climate change. Animal welfare is therefore most likely to be improved on a commercial scale by future breeding programmes that incorporate multiple goals of different stakeholders as far as possible and give higher priority to animal welfare. These include: i) broilers with high welfare traits; ii) broiler breeders that do not need feed restriction; iii) birds that can be grown in an economically profitable way; iv) birds with low disease levels without the need for routine medication; v) chicken meat that is healthy and good for humans to eat; and (vi) broilers and breeders that thrive in systems that are environmentally sustainable. Progress towards achieving these goals is hampered currently by the assumptions that high juvenile growth rate is incompatible with good welfare and that feed restriction in adults is inevitable with fast-growing juveniles. We challenge these assumptions at both genetic and whole-animal level and argue that the conflict between good welfare and productivity can be reduced by making use of all available genetic variation from existing breeds and other sources and selecting birds in the range of environments they will encounter in commercial production.

Background
Advanced malignant neoplasms of the larynx and hypopharynx pose many therapeutic challenges. Total pharyngolaryngectomy and total laryngectomy provide an opportunity to cure these tumours but are associated with significant morbidity. Reconstruction of the pharyngeal defect following total pharyngolaryngectomy demands careful consideration and remains an area of debate within surgical discussions.
MethodsThis paper describes a systemic analysis of pharyngeal reconstruction following total pharyngolaryngectomy and total laryngectomy, leveraging data collected over a 20-year period at a large tertiary referral centre.
ResultsAnalysing 155 patients, the results show that circumferential pharyngeal defects and prior radiotherapy have a significant impact on surgical complications. In addition, free tissue transfer in larger pharyngeal defects showed lower rates of post-operative anastomosis leak and stricture.
ConclusionPharyngeal resection carries a substantial risk of post-operative complications, and free tissue transfer appears to be an effective means of reconstruction for circumferential defects.

A central question in political representation is whether government responds to the people. To understand that, we need to know what the government is doing, and what the people think of it. We seek to understand a key question necessary to answer those bigger questions: How does American public opinion move over time? We posit three patterns of change over time in public opinion, depending on the type of issue. Issues on which the two parties regularly disagree provide clear partisan cues to the public. For these party-cue issues we present a slight variation on the thermostatic theory from (Soroka and Wlezien (2010); Wlezien (1995)); our “implied thermostatic model.” A smaller number of issues divide the public along lines unrelated to partisanship, and so partisan control of government provides no relevant clue. Finally, we note a small but important class of issues which capture response to cultural shifts.

Conditional cash transfer programs may boost the electoral fortunes of incumbents among beneficiary groups, but do they also influence recipient attitudes toward state legitimacy? This article examines the relationship between Brazil's Bolsa Família program and recipients’ sense of the Brazilian state's political legitimacy, from 2007 to 2014. Using AmericasBarometer data and propensity score matching, this study provides evidence that targeted cash benefits correlate with citizens’ views of the state, but that this relationship is limited to increasing trust in core state institutions, local government, and incumbent political actors. Diffuse dimensions of regime legitimacy, including recipients’ sense of political community, support for regime principles, and retrospective perceptions of national economic performance, are largely unaffected by the receipt of targeted benefits. Over time, the evidence also suggests that the impact of program receipt on these measures of support remains largely unchanged.

Three prehistoric sites in the Upper Mun River Valley of north-eastern Thailand have provided a detailed chronological succession comprising 12 occupation phases. These represent occupation spanning 2300 years, from initial settlement in the Neolithic (seventeenth century BC) through to the Iron Age, ending in the seventh century AD with the foundation of early states. The precise chronology in place in the Upper Mun River Valley makes it possible to examine changes in social organisation, technology, agriculture and demography against a background of climatic change. In this area the evidence for subsistence has been traditionally drawn from the biological remains recovered from occupation and mortuary contexts. This paper presents the results of carbon isotope analysis to identify and explain changes in subsistence over time and between sites, before comparing the results with two sites of the Sakon Nakhon Basin, located 230km to the north-east, to explore the possibility of regional differences.

In answer to the question ‘who writes the rules?’ relative to animal welfare the only accurate answer there can be is that the animal writes the rules. However in deciding the current animal welfare standards adopted by society the consumer plays a key rôle as the retail market is constantly working to meet the consumer's concerns. The consumer has a real, if often uninformed, concern regarding animal welfare. Animal welfare science clearly demonstrates that current systems are often at odds with the needs of animals. Ethical sectors of the food chain will put in place systems which reflect knowledge of animal welfare science as far as is currently possible and not merely the consumer perception in this area. The ability to deliver good animal welfare depends upon the willingness of the food chain to provide and the consumer to pay. The development of assurance schemes which truly address animal welfare science, translated into accurate labelling and backed by an awareness programme will make it easy for consumers to take the responsibility which, as citizens, they wish to do. We will then have an accurate picture of society's concerns to which the food chain can respond.

In order to better understand the conditions permitting a fire disaster to occur and to better postulate methods of fire prevention, an historic analysis of three fire disasters was performed. Journalistic accounts, official investigative studies and documents were examined concerning 3 fire disasters: (1) The General Slocum Ship Fire of 1904; (2) the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911; and (3) the Coconut Grove Nightclub Fire in Boston of 1942. Although the fires occurred on a ship, in a factory, and in a nightclub, several striking similarities were found.
(1) On June 15, 1904, the ship General Slocum embarked on a voyage up New York's East River, that ended in death for 1031 people. The ship, which was constructed entirely of wood, had recently passed inspection. The ship's crew, mostly longshoremen with little sea experience, had never fought a fire at sea. The hatches and bulkheads were flammable, the fire hoses were old and rotten, the fire buckets were out of reach and empty.

In order to analyze the cause, effect and relief efforts of the Johnstown floods of 1889,1936, and 1977, existing literature, journalistic accounts, and official documents concerning the floods were investigated.
At 4:00 PM on May 31, 1889, the South Fork Dam burst, releasing 60 million tons of water into the Conemaugh Valley. The flood destroyed Johnstown and the surrounding communities within a few minutes. The official totals were 2209 persons killed, 30,000 homeless, and 17.2 million dollars property damage. From Sang Hollow, a community four miles from Johnstown, the first description of the disastrous flood was sent to Pittsburgh by telegraph about two hours after the catastrophe. Several journalists set out by train for Johnstown immediately. A fire started in the flood debris and burned throughout the night. By morning rescue squads of survivors were trying to get through to those still marooned and to identify the dead.

An attempt is made to systematize the nomenclature of the calciferous and alkali amphiboles. The compositions of end-members can be plotted on a simple diagram, which can also be used to display the affinities of the naturally occurring minerals after deriving a basic atomic formula according to the rules given. The composition of an amphibole can in some cases be expressed quantitatively in terms of solid solution of two or three pure end-members.

An examination of available chemical analyses shows that the anthophyllite and cummingtonite series of amphibole minerals are not isodimorphous. Whilst the anthophyllites are truly lime-free amphiboles, small amounts of calcium are essential to stabilize the monoclinic lattice of cummingtonites, which should be regarded as lime-poor amphiboles, analogous to the lime-poor pyroxenes. The existence of synthetic clino-anthophyllites is considered.
